Turkey Asks Nigeria to Close Schools 'Linked to Gulen'

Turkey’s government has reportedly asked Nigeria to close down 17 Turkish schools in the West African country that it says are linked to Fethullah Gulen, the U.S.-based cleric that Ankara blames for the recent failed coup. Members of the Gulen Movement, headed by the cleric, run about 300 schools in Turkey and over 1,000 worldwide.
The Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria, Hakan Cakil, said that all schools linked to Gulen in Turkey had been shut down. He added that it was “misleading” for the schools in Nigeria to be referred to as Turkish, since they had nothing to do with the government in Ankara, Nigeria’s Premium Times reported on Thursday. Cakil claimed the schools were located in various cities around the country, including the capital Abuja, the financial hub Lagos, and the northern cities of Kano and Kaduna.

A faction within the Turkish military launched an attempted coup against the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the night of July 15. Major bridges in Istanbul were closed and military helicopters flew over the capital as the faction declared that it had taken control of the country. At least 246 people died during the coup, and more than 2,000 were injured.
Gulen and his followers were blamed for the coup, with Erdogan accusing them of attempting to create a “parallel structure” in the country’s institutions, including the police, judiciary, media and armed forces. Gulen, who is based in Pennsylvania, condemned the coup and denied Erdoğan’s accusations . The cleric has a wide support base in Turkey and a network of private schools stretching across 140 countries.
The ambassador made his comments during a visit from Nigerian senator Shehu Sani, the vice-chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign affairs in Nigeria. Cakil said that he had contacted Nigeria’s Foreign Minister Geoffrey Onyeama and the chief of staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, Abba Kyari, to request the closure of the schools.

“This is an issue that the Turkish government has attached so much importance [to],” said Cakil, who claimed that the schools were raising funds for “illegal activities.” “This is a matter of national security for us in Turkey. I have instructions from my government to follow up this matter and we will be very happy to obtain the support of Nigerian legislators on that issue,” he said.

The Nigerian senator did not say categorically whether the schools would be close but said that Turkey had a right to be concerned about its security. Sani urged the Turkish ambassador to “use the instrument of democracy, liberty and constitutional right[s] to bring to book” those suspected of involvement in the coup.

Erdoğan’s government is carrying out a massive crackdown on Gulen’s supporters. The government has placed tens of thousands of people under suspension or investigation since the coup, and on Wednesday dismissed almost 1,700 military personnel and closed 131 media outlets.

Militants In Lagos, shoot 6 Policemen

Lagos State police command reportedly
said it has arrested not fewer than five suspects following the wicked attack on Igando community by suspected militants.
The hoodlums were said to have continued yesterday morning and allegedly left six policemen injured after they were shot.
A day after the intense battle between the pipeline vandals and the police operatives, sporadic continued unabated as the gunmen staged a comeback and rained terror on community dwellers, yesterday.
The state police public relations officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, who was at the scene with the commissioner of police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni, according to Leadership newspaper noted that the residents were still traumatised and angry over the development.
The suspected militants stormed the Obadore, Ewedogbon, Akesan Fatoki, and Egan communities of Igando and left six persons wounded, as they robbed residents of their valuables.
Despite the heavy police presence and the deployment of drones, helicopters and Armoured Personnel Carriers (APC), the gunmen came back to the community again to unleash mayhem yesterday.
However, the CP had not gone far when the hoodlums struck, so the police were able to immediately deploy their personnel and repelled the gunmen again, which triggered rumours that the vandals attacked the police boss.
Some of the residents lamented that they have been living in fear and apprehension by the continuous attacks in recent times, called on the police to ensure that the criminal elements are fished out.
One of the residents who spoke on anonymity said, “We don’t feel safe anymore. Our lives are under threat. These criminals come here at will, rob and traumatize us and go scot-free. Now, the police have told us that they can’t access the creeks because of its nature, isn’t it high time they invite the navy and the air force, with their advantage of the air and the water to tackle this menace?
Granted that thick foliage covered the creeks, but they shouldn’t fold their hands and watch us being maimed off. The air force should carry out an aerial bombardment of the area, while the navy should patrol the creeks.”

Orie Basi steps out with Uchenna

SHE is beautiful, that simply describes this young artiste who is poised to take the Nigerian music scene in a vice like grip in the next couple of months with her single entitled Uchenna.
Uchenna (Ije Love) was inspired by true love”, the tall, fair complexion singer and song writer who hails from Abia State said, a thin smile playing on her lips, adding, “Uchenna in Igbo land means my father's mind or wish, and as a girl, my dad always wished for a good man for me. I wasn't really talking about a particular man in the song though, I was talking about all the African good men who love and respect their women.”
Born Praise Chinyere Okoh Obasi, the singer started music at a very early age.  She took her singing talent to another level when she joined her high school music group; she also became a member of the Assemblies of God Church choir, Lome, Togo,
Basi has worked with producers like Omar B, Phat E, Ekelly, Papa K, Doc Def among many others and what makes her stand out according to her, “ Is my ability to sing in all the four major languages I speak and I always incorporate African culture into my music. Nigerians should be on the look-out, it’s going to be a surprise and I can't wait.
I speak and can sing in English, French, Ewe (Togo language) and Igbo with passable Spanish,” she added. She grew up in Togo.
Just like most young artistes in the Nigerian music scene, her major challenge is finance: “My challenge in this industry is finance. As a young artist, I have to work really hard to save up for my studio sessions, and believe me it's not easy but by God's grace, I am getting by.”
If you are thinking the Uchenna single that will sure blow the minds of Nigerians when it drops is the only rabbit in Orie Basi’s hat, then you are mistaken. “I have so many recorded songs, others are still cooking in the studio and some are yet to be recorded. I am an artiste who loves to write every single day as long as I am inspired. Often, you will see me with my note book or my phone writing lyrics, that's me. I was born this way and music is my life, the truth is I have actually lost count of how many songs I have, I record anytime I'm inspired, and I get inspired everywhere with little things around us.”

AFRIMA commends AU's single passport

Chairperson, African Union Commission,  Dr. Nkosazana-Dlamini-Zuma
The International Committee of The All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) has commended the African Union (AU) for the launch of a single, common electronic passport (e-Passport) for all Africans at the just concluded 27th AU Summit, in Kigali, Rwanda.
It also applauded the ultimate goal of the single passport which is set to realize the dream of visa-free travel for African citizens within the African continent by 2020.
In the same vein, the AU’s single, common electronic passport throughout the continent falls squarely within the framework of Africa’s Agenda 2063 and has the specific aim of facilitating free movement of persons, goods and services around the continent in order to foster intra-Africa
trade, integration and socio-economic development.
Reacting to this development, President/ Executive Producer, AFRIMA, Mike Dada, said, “The African Union's plan to allowing free movement of citizens within the African continent is a stepping stone towards building stronger unity among African nations and this is what we at the
International Committee of AFRIMA have been canvassing and propagating for years in line with the AFRIMA’s vision.
“For us in AFRIMA, it is a strong step towards making every African citizen to think and act beyond national identities and identify themselves as citizens of the African continent with a sense of pride that, ‘I am an African.’
“We have found that it is easier to travel to Europe and America from Africa than Africans travelling within Africa. Yearly, we face a big hurdle in visa processing, direct flights and protocol to bring in over 880 nominees/superstars and their guests, 150 production crew members,
international media and over 2000 international invited guests to the AFRIMA Awards ceremony annually.”
“The single passport will also ease and facilitate one of the AFRIMA objectives which is to engage all the stakeholders who are critical to the awards process to give them a platform for knowledge sharing and capacity-building on the continent. AFRIMA has embarked and organised
stakeholders’ engagements and press conferences in over 25 African countries in the five regions of Africa. This we will do until we cover the 54 member states,” he concluded.

Former Vanderbilt player jailed 15 years for dorm rape

A former Vanderbilt football player was reportedly sentenced Friday to 15 years in prison after he was convicted of taking part in the gang rape of an unconscious female student.
According to AP, Davidson County Criminal Court Judge Monte Watkins handed down the sentence for Cory Batey after the victim in the case said her life has been shattered as a result of the rape.
The woman was a neuroscience and economics major when she was assaulted in a dorm on the Nashville campus in June of 2013. In all, four former football players were charged. The Associated Press does not generally identify victims of sexual assault.
The players used their cellphones to take pictures of the rape. One also videoed it and sent the footage to friends as it was happening.
The victim said she learned of what happened to her when detectives showed her the graphic images retrieved from the phones.
During her victim impact statement, she described the horror she felt seeing the images of herself.
''I've seen with my own eyes what I was when Mr. Batey was done with me: a piece of trash, face down in a hallway, covered in his urine and palm prints, a photograph he took himself,'' the woman said. ''There are no words to describe the horror of the images from that night and how it feels to watch yourself be dehumanized.''
She wept throughout much of her statement as she described how her life and her belief in the fundamental goodness of people were both upended with the discovery of what happened to her.
The sentencing comes amid widespread furor over a Stanford University swimmer who was sentenced to six months in jail for sexually assaulting an unconscious woman on a college campus.
Batey was convicted in April of aggravated rape, which carries a sentence of 15 to 25 years. Prosecutors asked for the maximum, saying the crime was particularly egregious and that the punishment would send a message about campus rapes.
Batey apologized for his actions, especially to his family and mother. He also apologized to Vanderbilt University.
Batey and Brandon Vandenburg were convicted last year, but the verdicts were tossed because a juror did not reveal he was a victim of statutory rape. They have both been convicted a second time. Two other players are awaiting trial.

Nollywood directors threaten to ban porn stars

Worried by the alarming rate at which soft-porn movies are uploaded indiscriminately on Youtube and other social media platforms in recent times, creating a serious negative impression about the country’s movie industry, some aggrieved directors have come together to stem the tide.
To arrest the ugly trend, the directors under the aegis of Nollywood Crusader Directors in a statement made available to HVP, and signed on their behalf by actor Charles Awurum and founder of Igbo film forum, comrade Eze Harris Chuma, have threatened henceforth to slam a ban on actors and actresses who feature in any sex Internet movie. “We have also agreed not to employ the services of the actors in any movie they are directing,” they said.
They have also called on parents to always monitor the Internet to see what their wards are doing in the name of acting.
“This is everybody’s fight. Many innocent young girls are being tricked or forced into accepting to act the indecent roles and some because of their innocence, childish brain, and hunger to become movie stars, willingly accept the roles, and even pay for it with their bodies or money. Those that have not gotten to the age of reasoning are the ones we cry for. Those above 20 years can go ahead and act their blue movies, if that is what they have agreed with their parents. They cannot be used by any concerned Nollywood Crusader directors.”
This is not in our culture, and it is not our tradition. Parents should be careful of what their children are using there phones to watch. At 4 years, most of our children have started to operate phones very well, even more than some adults. We are talking today, for the sake of tomorrow. This young actors will be mothers and fathers tomorrow, they will sit and watch the shameful acts of their parents, years past,” the statement reads. According to Eze Chuma, the group’s task force will be working with the Nigeria Police to ensure that the perpetrators are arrested and brought to book. “ Any actor or actress caught in the act will be isolated and punished accordingly,” Chuma warned.

Hoodlums attack photojournalist as DSS, policemen look the other side

A photojournalist with Punch Newspaper, Sodiq Adelakun  was reportedly brutalised by hoodlums in Lagos, Friday after policemen and Department of State Services operatives failed to come to his rescue.
Policemen on duty
According to Sahara Reporters, Adelakun was covering a protest by the Joe Ajaero-led faction of the Nigeria Labour Congress during the Annual General Meeting of the Nigerian Employers Consultative Association’s Annual General Meeting at Alausa-Ikeja when he was attacked.
He said the attack was carried out by hoodlums, who hijacked the protest at the NECA House in the glare of policemen and DSS personnel.
According to him, the hoodlums armed with guns, bottles and sticks arrived the scene in two buses and chased after him.
“I ran with all my strength, but I was overtaken, beaten, punched, stabbed…. my eyes were blank while they robbed me of my camera, smartphones and wallet,” he said.
“They threatened to gun me down if I don’t cooperate in the presence of the DSS and policemen. Sadly, for 10 minutes it was just me, my blank eyes and my creator.”
When contacted, the Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Police Command, SP Dolapo Badmos, told one of our correspondents that she would make some calls to find out what happened and get back to him.

Omoni Oboli speaks on the worst experience of her life

Nollywood  actress cum producer, Omoni Oboli went down memory lane during the week, recalling what it means to loose a loving mother at the age of 24. She described the painful loss as the worst experience of her life.
The ' Being Mrs Elliot' star took to her Facebook page to pour her heart out. She was reacting to the gruesome murder of a female pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God and mother of seven, Mrs. Eunice Elisha, who was killed last Saturday morning by unknown assailants while preaching around the Gbazango-West area of Kubwa, a satellite town in the Federal Capital Territory.
In her words, 'I was about 24 years old when I lost my mom. I already had a family of my own but till date, it's the worst experience of my life. She had been ill but that didn't make it any less painful.
Loosing a mom suddenly, needlessly and senselessly to some barbarians is just downright gut wrenching and utterly heartbreaking!'
'We still cannot tolerate ourselves in 2016. It's a shame! Shame on all the idiots who cannot live with their neighbours in peace irrespective of tribal or religious differences. God neither sleeps not slumbers! While we are waiting and praying for God to visit them how He deems fit, we must not relent in crying for justice because we the people are more powerful than we know! Make your voice heard! Loud it on all your social media handles and every platform available to you. Trust me, they hear us! I'm on an early morning road trip from Abeokuta to Lagos and I'm just enraged! Rest in the blossom of the Lord Eunice Olawale while we seek and ask for justice on your behalf. We must not relent!'

Japan offers to develop Nigeria animation and children films

The Federal Government during the week accepted offer by the Japanese Government to assist Nigeria to develop capacity in production of animation and children films.
Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed disclosed this on Thursday in Abuja, at a meeting with Mr Sadamotu Kusaoke, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plempotentiary, Embassy of Japan in Nigeria.
Mohammed said the government also welcomed the offer by the Japanese Government to accept Nigerian movies in Japanese film houses, in particular at the annual Tokyo International Film Festival.
He said there was dearth of animation and children film in Nigeria, and the offer would go a long way to develop the sub-sector.
The minister noted that developing animation films would curtail the trend where many children watched films that were not appropriate for their age.
He noted that Nigeria being a diversity of many culture had abundant folklore that could be developed into animation films for local consumption and exportation.
According to him, Nigeria film industry is the third largest producer of films in the world and government is prepared to develop the sector.
The minister assured that both governments would work out the modalities for the cooperation and cultural exchange.
He suggested that the Japanese Government should send experts to the country to train Nigeria producers in the field of animation and children films
Mohammed said Nigeria had abundance of talents with imagination on animation and children films, but the challenge was the lack of technology for its development.
The minister seized the opportunity of the meeting to explain to the envoy the economic and developmental programmes of the Federal Government.
Earlier, Kusaoke had said that Japan was prepared to look beyond economic relations with Nigeria and expand exchange in culture and in film industry.
He said developing the culture and film sector would enable the Japanese to see the other face of Nigeria and vice versa.

Euro 2016: What injured Ronaldo told Portugal players

Portugal full-back Cedric Soares reportedly revealed a stricken Cristiano Ronaldo issued a rallying call to his team-mates at half-time in the 1-0 Euro 2016 final win over France on Sunday.
Fernando Santos' team claimed a first major international honour for their country when substitute Eder fired a superb extra-time winner to stun an expectant Stade de France.
Their hopes appeared to suffer a terminal blow early in the match when Ronaldo suffered a knee injury in a challenge with France midfielder Dimitri Payet.
The Real Madrid superstar twice attempted to play through the pain after receiving treatment but admitted defeat in his personal battle after 25 minutes.
Nevertheless, Ronaldo dried his tears and sought to focus his colleagues on the task at hand during the interval, before spending the rest of the match as a notably animated figure on the touchline.
"It was a very, very tough moment. It was a really tough moment for me and for the team," Cedric said of Ronaldo's injury. "I think everybody was a little bit in shock but at half-time Cristiano had fantastic words with us.
"He gave us a lot of confidence and he said, 'Listen people, I'm sure we will win this Euro so stay together and fight for it'.
"It was unbelievable. All the team had a fantastic attitude and showed that when you fight as one you are much much stronger.
"He was fantastic. His attitude was unbelievable. At half-time he helped a lot, our colleagues, he had always a lot of motivational words. All the team reacted to them so it was very, very good."
Portugal survived some near misses after the interval as tournament top scorer Antoine Griezmann headed a glorious 65th-minute chance over before Andre-Pierre Gignac struck the post during stoppage time.
Ronaldo's replacement Ricardo Quaresma drew strength from French profligacy and Portugal appeared the more dangerous side in extra time before Eder's emphatic breakthrough.
"When I saw them missing one, two, three chances, it only made me believe even more that if we had an opportunity, we could win the game," Quaresma said.
"In the end, we worked hard and we achieved it. We are very happy.
"We knew that working hard all together, we would have a good chance. It's a moment of pride, a moment of joy because we have written our names down in history."

Draymond Green arrested for assault in East Lansing

Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green was reportedly arrested for assault on Sunday in East Lansing, Mich., where he played four seasons of college ball at Michigan State, according to MLive.com.
“The police department is not confirming any arrest with that name,” East Lansing Police Lt. Scott Wrigglesworth was quoted as saying. “What I can confirm is that we did arrest a current NBA basketball player this weekend and he was arrested for assault. That’s all we’re confirming right now.”
However, Police confirmed to ESPN that Green was the player in question, the incident occurred in a restaurant and the alleged victim was another man, who was uninjured. The alleged assault was logged by police at 2:28 a.m., according to a court document uncovered by Bay Area News Group’s Diamond Leung.
“It was basically an altercation between two guys,” police told ESPN. “There’s no injuries. He was released with a $200 bond on Sunday.”
The 26-year-old Green captured Second Team All-NBA honors this past season, leading the Golden State Warriors to the greatest regular-season record in NBA history (73-9) and coming within minutes of winning a second consecutive championship. He averaged 14 points, 9.5 rebounds and 7.4 assists.
Green was the subject of much on-court controversy in the playoffs, ultimately receiving a suspension for Game 5 of the NBA Finals that may have cost his team a chance at basketball immortality. Of course, that did not prevent him from earning a Team USA invite for the upcoming 2016 Rio Olympics.
The picture of the alleged assault painted by a source to San Francisco Chronicle reporter Evan Sernoffsky does not seem out of character for a player who struck both Oklahoma City Thunder center Steven Adams and Cleveland Cavaliers superstar LeBron James in the groin this past postseason.
